When I first became the CASA Advocate for seven siblings, I knew this case would be challenging. These children had endured so much—neglect, frequent placement changes, and inconsistent care. But one thing became clear very quickly: their education had been deeply neglected.

I will never forget discovering that two of the siblings had attended fewer than 40 days of school in an entire year. Several of them did not have updated Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 plans, and without these supports, their schools were not meeting their needs. As an educator with years of experience working with children, this broke my heart.

I knew that stabilizing their education would be critical to their healing and growth. I worked alongside other CASA volunteers to attend school meetings, meet with teachers and counselors, and advocate for the kids every step of the way. Sometimes, it meant visiting their schools, behavior programs, or even residential placements to ensure they had the resources they needed to succeed.

Through persistence and teamwork, we began to be effective:

  • We secured updated IEPs for the children in 2023 and 2024.
  • We collaborated with teachers and counselors to create trauma-informed approaches to learning.
  • We ensured tutoring was provided to help the children catch up academically.
  • We made sure they had uniforms, supplies, and reliable transportation so they could focus on learning.

Today, I am proud to share four incredible milestones:

  • Received Intensive Placement Support Services/Mentors
  • Received education supports and modifications for youth when they were in residential and clinical placements
  • Another sibling, who struggled with reading, now enjoys books
  • A sibling who was once not on track to graduate eighth grade has successfully graduated—and another is just one grade away from making the A & B honor roll!

These moments of triumph remind me why CASA’s work is so important. When children have consistent advocacy and support, they can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Next week, I will share the pivotal moment that brought the siblings closer together and strengthened their bond as a family.
